NOTE: Several of these alternatives provide third-party add-ons that allow free streaming of paid video content. Others that you may wish to consider include Emby, Kodi, Stremio, and Universal Media Server. Why Plex? It’s the most popular media server app for macOS.

In this article, we’re using a Mac mini as the hardware and Plex as the application to organize the media. Media servers range from servers that provide video on demand to smaller personal computers or NAS (Network Attached Storage) for the home. Wikipedia defines a media server as follows:Ī media server is a computer appliance or an application software that stores digital media (video, audio or images) and makes it available over a network. Read along to see how we were able to transform a 2014 Mac mini into a home media server. Macs have good longevity and older units are usable for a variety of purposes other than day-to-day work. The old 21.5-inch iMac becomes a FaceTime “videophone” for Grandma. An old MacBook becomes a school laptop for one of the kids. Old Macs never die, they just get reused. From top, an Apple SuperDrive, the 2014 Mac mini, and an 8TB OWC miniStack drive If Apple do not restore the File Sharing functionality I will be seeking my money back as the current version is not what I paid for.The Media Server. I understand that we are being coerced into using cloud based equivalents but I am not comfortable doing this until all of their security issues are resolved so they are 100% secure, Thats never going to happen.
After buying it I made use of the Cashing and Time Machine functionality, all of which have now been removed forcing you to usethe OS versions, NOT WHAT I PAID FOR. In the discription of this latest update, it implies that the sharing functionality has bee incorporated into the High Seria OS, This is not true, the sharing functionality has always been in the OS and is no different now as it was several years ago and was the reason I bought Server in the first place. I first bought it as I was looking for a good File Sharing server app and that was my main motivation as the OS bilt in sharing app is very clumsy to use and hard to read. I have been using Server app for several years and have been very happy with it. I am so disapointed with this latest version of this app.
If I had wanted an iPad, I'd've bought one. Macs are unique because, among other things, they can run server services. All very sad, really-I was always ambivilent of Server since 10.7, but it's still a tragic end. MacPorts also has a nice port for the VPN server, which though not talked about, is right there in the base OS just waiting for you to configure it.

You should use a package manager to install patched services (I turn to MacPorts for this purpose), and configure those with certs obtained from a Pre-Mojave server installation. The other major missing feature is that you can no longer request push certificates for mail/contacts/calendars, so you can no longer use those certs with third-party Open Source options (like the ones Apple recommends) as you could with previous versions of the server. Apple should make that easier by restricting all traffic to TLS with a custom SNI, or even, perhaps, just offer a self-hosted option to compensate. So if you can get past all the silly fussing this thing needs from your (now, necessarily, external) DNS configuration, it ought to be possible to reverse-proxy into it from HAProxy or the like. It's hardly a consolation, of course, but the slight positive of Apple's more-or-less complete destruction of the product is that the web server configuration used by Profile Manager is now very minimal. In the space of an evening you have manged to ruin my view of Apple! Though to be fair with all the issues ive had with Catalina in general, its just put the cherry on the cake. I cannot work remotely until this has been remedied. You have effectively ruined my work setup. Its a step backwards! Now trying to revert back to something that will work on a previous OS version. Update: After wipoing my machine and spending the best part of 4 hours to get Catalina installed and other serbices, I find the VPN service that I use in MacOS Server has been removed!! WHY!! Why have you done this. If you cant give an upgarde path give us a way to remove the old profiles and install fresh! I have trawled numerous web pages and googled for hours! nothing wortks!! Going to have to nuke my machine now!
